XJTU Student Exchange Program

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), founded in 1896, is a national key university directly under the administration of China's Ministry of Education. As one of China's top ten research-intensive universities and a member of the C9 League—China's equivalent of the Ivy League—it operates as a comprehensive research university, encompassing 11 major disciplinary categories, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and interdisciplinary studies. Nearly 4,000 international students from over 130 countries and regions are currently pursuing their studies at XJTU. In 2013, the university was designated by China's Ministry of Education as a“Demonstration Base for International Education”. In 2024, XJTU achieved the highest rating of Class A+ in the re-certification of higher education quality for international students in China. In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities, XJTU secured the 10th position.

I.Program Introduction

Xi’an Jiaotong University (hereinafter referred as“XJTU”) is welcoming of receiving exchanging students in accordance with the student exchange agreements signed between XJTU and overseas universities (hereinafter referred as“home university”). XJTU will accept application from international students for inter-university exchange programs.

Duration and Number of Applicants

The duration of the exchange program and the number of quota for applicants are specified in the corresponding exchange agreements. Typically, XJTU’s autumn semester commences in September, and the spring semester commences in March.

II.Eligibility

The applicant’s home university must have signed a student exchange agreement with XJTU, and the agreement must be currently in effect.

1.Applicants for XJTU’s exchange program must be currently enrolled full-time degree-seeking students at their home university (please refer to the specific exchange agreement for details).

2.Applicants must obtain a nomination from their home university prior to submitting their application. The Nomination Form (only the electronic copy is required) must be submitted to XJTU at least one month before the application deadline.

3.In consideration of cultural exchange and mutual learning, applicants must, in principle, be non-Chinese citizens holding valid passports

III.Application Deadlines

Spring Semester (starts in March each year)

Application period: September 1 to December 31;

Nomination deadline: 30 November.

Autumn Semester (starts in September each year)

Application period: September 1 to June 30 next year;

Nomination deadline: 31 May.

If the application timeline is otherwise specified in the exchange agreement, the agreement shall prevail.

IV.Fees

1.Application fees are waived. Tuition fees are waived in accordance with the provisions of the exchange agreement.

2.Regarding accommodation: If the student exchange agreement includes explicit terms on accommodation, such terms shall be followed. If no accommodation provisions are specified in the agreement, incoming exchange students must book on-campus accommodation at their own expense.

V.Application Documents

1.Photocopy of Valid Ordinary Passport

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of enrollment

2.Original Non-criminal Recordwithin the validity period

It should be issued by local police or Judicial department. Behavior performance certificate issued by Home University is also acceptable.

3. Completed Original Physical Examination Record for Foreigners and Blood Test Report

The physical examination must cover ALL the items listed in the form. (Download at http://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/2.pdf and fill in Chinese or English.) The forms with incomplete records or without the suggestion and signature of the attending physician, an official cross-edge stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.

5.Original Academic Transcript either in Chinese or English with stamp or signature

6.Recommendation Letters

One original recommendation letter written by professors or associate professors for bachelor student, two for postgraduate student.

7.Certificate of Language Proficiency

For Chinese-taught programs: HSK Level 4 Certificate with a score of 180 or above. Other language proficiency certificates are also acceptable, subject to XJTU’s approval.

For English-taught programs: IELTS transcript with a score of 6.0 or above, or TOEFL transcript with a score of 80 or above. Other language proficiency certificates are also acceptable, subject to XJTU’s approval.

If there are explicit provisions on language proficiency in the agreement between the two universities, the agreement shall prevail.

8.GPA

No special requirements, please recommend students according to the exchange agreement.

VI.Application Procedure

1. Applicant needs to contact with home university in advance to confirm if home university signed student exchange agreements with XJTU. If so, applicant should apply for nomination from home university. If not, applicant can apply for XJTU Visiting Scholar Program (Details refer to: https://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/zsxm/fxl_ykxm/zyjxxm.htm).

2. If applicant is confirmed by home university, home university will submit official Nomination List to XJTU at least one month before the application deadline.

3. After confirmation of nomination from home university, application should log in to the online application system of School of International Education of XJTU (http://isso.xjtu.edu.cn/recruit/login) and create your own account.

2. Select“校际交流项目/Student Exchange Program”, complete the online application form, and upload all the required documents as instructed by the system.

3. Confirm that the application is complete and await notification of the next steps.

Note：Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online system; hard copies will not be accepted.

VII.VISA

The university will provide Admission Notice, JW202/DQform (Visa form) for the admitted applicants to applying for X visa for coming to China. Those who are with other types of visas will not be allowed for registration at XJTU.
