Master Program in Foreign Languages and Literatures

The School of Foreign Studies of Xi’an Jiaotong University offers a Master’s program in Foreign Languages and Literatures for international students. This program enrolls students infiveareas: English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Foreign linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and International and Regional Studies. Students intending to get enrolled to study can choose one of the areas. For all the students, they will have to study the core curriculum courses; and then, students are also expected to choose some courses for their specific thesis research from a list of selective courses. After the completion of the course studies and thesis defense under the specific area, students will be granted aMaster of Arts in literature (MA).

V.Core Curriculum

Area 1: English Language and Literature (taught in English): Overview of China, Comprehensive Chinese, Selected Readings of Western Literature Theories, Introduction to American Short Stories, Selected Readings of English Short Stories, Modern and Contemporary Societies and Cultures of European Countries;

Area 2: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (taught in English):Overview of China, Comprehensive Chinese, Second Language Acquisition Theories, Second Language Research Methodology, English Writing for Academic Purposes.

Area 3: Japanese Language and Literature (taught in Japanese):Overview of China, Comprehensive Chinese, Japanese Linguistics, Studies on Japanese Culture, Japanese Literature Theories, Language Research Methodology (Japanese);

Area 4: French Language and Literature (taught in French):Overview of China, Comprehensive Chinese, French-Chinese Translation Theories and Practice, French Short Stories and Poetry, Comparative Studies on French and Chinese Languages, French Literature Theories;

Area 5: International and Regional Studies (taught in Chinese):Overview of China, Comprehensive Chinese, Intercultural Communication Studies, Public Opinions Studies, International Politics, Corpus Linguistics.
