I. Program Introduction

The Atomic Energy Scholarship (AES) Program of China (Phase 1) was jointly initiated by the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (MOE) with the aim of fostering outstanding young talent working in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy from developing countries. The first phase of five years has seen an annual enrollment of 40 students to study for nuclear engineering and nuclear science and technology related Master’s and Doctoral degrees in China with full scholarship provided by the Chinese government. To date, over 200 high-caliber professionals from over 30 countries have been educated and trained, with tangible results and wide recognition from various countries.

Based on the success of the AES Program (Phase 1), the CAEA and the MOE decided to launch the AES Program (Phase 2) in 2023. It is planned that in the coming five years (2023-2027), full scholarships will be awarded annually to100 students from developing countries who pursue study in China for nuclear energy and nuclear technology applications relatedMaster’s and Doctoral degrees. A total of 13 top universities in China have been accredited under the program to provide such curricula as nuclear infrastructure, nuclear fuel cycle and material, nuclear reactor engineering, nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear medicine and nuclear agriculture.

II. XJTU Introduction

Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), established in 1896, is a national key university directly under the administration of China’s Ministry of Education. As one of China’s top ten research-intensive universities and a member of the C9 League—China’s equivalent of the Ivy League—it operates as a comprehensive research university, encompassing 11 major disciplinary categories, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and interdisciplinary studies.

Nearly 4,000 international students from over 130 countries and regions are currently pursuing their studies at XJTU. In 2013, the university was designated by China’s Ministry of Education as a“Demonstration Base for International Education”. In recent national accreditation, XJTU was awarded as A+ grade（the highest）in the Re-accreditation of the International Education Quality organized by MOE among 894 Chinese Higher Education Institutions, one of the only three universities with the honor. In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities, XJTU secured the 10th position.

III. Highlights of the Program

1. The Best Subject in China. Nuclear Science and Technology of XJTU has always been one of the leading subjects of itskind in China in various ranking andevaluation systems, for example, it was selected as the Best Academic Subject in China byShanghai Ranking’s in 2024.

5. Full CSC Scholarship.It covers tuition fees, accommodation, monthlystipend (Master’s candidates: CNY 3,000 per month; Doctoral candidates: CNY 3,500 per month) and comprehensive medical insurance in China.

V. Eligibility

The scholarship is open to applicants who meet the following requirements:

1.Citizens of countries other than the PRC who are committed to the nuclear industry for the benefit of the society and in good health;

2.Holders of a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in such majors as nuclear engineering, nuclear technology applications, mechanics, energy, chemical engineering and physics with strong capability of scientific research;

3.Proficiency in English (spoken, written & reading), with valid certificate of language proficiency;

4.Education and age limit:

•Holders of a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent under the age of 35 when applying for a Master's program;

•Holders of a Master's degree or its equivalent under the age of 40 when applying for a doctoral program;

5.Those with work experience in nuclear or related fields will be given priority consideration.

Students should pay close attention to the application system and registered email; follow up on theupdate of the admission process.

a）Application fee is 800RMB which is non-refundable.

3. Completed Original Physical Examination Record for Foreigners and Blood Test Report

The physical examination must cover ALL the items listed in the form. (Download at http://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/2.pdf and fill in Chinese or English.) The forms with incomplete records or without the suggestion and signature of the attending physician, an official cross-edge stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.

5. Original Highest Diploma and Its Notarized Copies (Prospective diploma winners must submit an official certificate from their current university.)

6. Original and notarized copies of transcripts since undergraduate period

The transcript should include the grades of undergraduate, Master’s (if any), Doctoral (if any) period of study up to the most recent semester. The transcript should be issued and stamped by the Academic Affairs Office, Graduate School or the relevant student administration department of the school.

7. Recommendation Letters

Two original recommendation letters written by professors or associate professors.

Master program: A provisional acceptanceletter, namelyXi’an Jiaotong University Recommendation Letter from Potential Supervisor, is optional.

PhD program: ARecommendation Letter from Potential Supervisor is compulsory.

8. A Study Plan or Research Proposal

Applicants must submit a written study plan or research proposal in English or Chinese, with a minimum of 1000 words for a Master's degree and 1500 words for a Doctoral degree..

9. Original Research Achievements and Notarized Copies

Applicants may submit published research papers, award certificates or other documents to prove their achievement and ability in academic research if any.

10. Certificate of Language Proficiency

Transcript of IELTS 6.0 and above, TOEFL 80 and above, Duolingo 110 and above. Other language proficiency certificates are also acceptable upon approval by XJTU.

11. Photocopy of Valid Ordinary Passport.

The passport should be valid later than March 2027. If you do not meet the requirements, please renew your passport in time.

NOTES:

a) The materials uploaded in the system should be clear, true and valid. It is recommended that the applicant use professional equipment to scan the relevant documents to be submitted, and the consequences caused by the unclear or unidentifiable materials shall be taken by the applicant.

b) Incomplete Applications will be rejected.
