Application Guide for 2023 Xi’an Jiaotong University International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as Recommending Institutions) may recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to further their studies in international Chinese language education and related programs at Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as Host Institutions).

I. ELIGIBILITY

a) Be a non-Chinese citizen;

b) Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of the Host Institution;

c) Be in good physical and mental health, be in good academic and behavioral standing;

d) Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;

e) Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2023. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45

II. CATEGORIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

A. Scholarship for One-Year Study Program

The program commences in September 2023, and scholarship is provided for a maximum of eleven months. International students who have benefited from similar scholarships are not eligible.

a) Chinese Language and Literature

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

b) Chinese Language Study

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

B. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Program

The program commences either in September 2023 or March 2024, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of five months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

● Chinese Language and Literature

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

C. Scholarship for Four-Week Study: Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family

The program commences either in July or December, 2023, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of four weeks. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

Applicants are required to provide HSK test scores. The program may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10- 15 participants per group. Before the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with the Host Institution(s) and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for review and approval.

D. Xi’an Jiaotong University International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship for One-Year Study Program

The program commences in September 2023, and scholarship is provided for a maximum of eleven months. International students who have benefited from similar scholarships are not eligible.

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

E. Scholarship forOnline Programs

a) The Online Program for One-Year Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Under most circumstances, a score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3) is required, and priority will be given to those who also provide an HSKK test score.

b) The Online Program for One-Semester Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Under most circumstances, an HSK test score (regardless of level or score) is required.

c) Please consult the Host Institution for the eligibility and application for Special Online Study Programs.

III.APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Step 1 Online registration will be available from 1 March, 2023 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (http://www.chinese.cn). Please log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions (Please select Xi’an Jiaotong University as host institution); submit application materials online.

Step 2 Log in Xi’an Jiaotong University’s International student application system at

http://isso.xjtu.edu.cn/recruit/loginand submit application materials online according to the instructions.

Step 3 Complete the application. Applicant should pay attention to the application system and registration email, review comments and scholarship review results.

Step 4 The successful applicant must confirm with the Host Institutions to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out the scholarship certificate online, and register at XJTU on the designated date as per the Letter of Admission.

The Application Deadlines (Beijing Time):

1. April 15 for the application for enrollment in July.

2. May 15 for the application for enrollment in September.

3. September 15 for the application for enrollment in December.

4. November 15 for the application for enrollment in March, 2024.

Notes:

a) In-service Chinese language teachers may be exempted from HSK/HSKK certificates if they provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.

b) Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website. IV. Scholarship Coverage and Criteria

The scholarship supports tuition, accommodation, living allowance (excluding four-week study program students) and comprehensive medical insurance. Online Programs only provides tuition fee.

V. Application Documents

A. For all applicants

1. A scanned copy of the passport photo page.

2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK/HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);

3. A reference letter by the head of the Recommending Institution.

4. Non-criminal record (submit to university’s application system).

5. Physical examination record for foreigner (submit to university’s application system. You can download at https://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/tigejianchajilu.pdf and fill in Chinese or English. The applicant must strictly take all the examination as required by the Form. Leaving a blank or absence of suggestion and signature of the doctor or seal of the hospital will make the form invalid. The results are valid for six months.)

B. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China. (You can download athttps://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/Application_Guide/Data_Download.htmand fill in Chinese or English.)

C. In-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer.

Notes:

1. Applications will be considered as invalid if information provided is incomplete, fake and invalid.

2. Scholarship winners shall register at Xi’an Jiaotong University at the required date, otherwise their scholarship will be cancelled.

3. Scholarship will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination when registration for enrollment.
