Introduction of Xi’an Jiaotong University

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), founded in 1896, is a national key university directly under the administration of China's Ministry of Education. As one of China's top ten research-intensive universities and a member of the C9 League—China's equivalent of the Ivy League—it operates as a comprehensive research university, encompassing 11 major disciplinary categories, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and interdisciplinary studies.

At XJTU, 4484 international students from 128 countries and regions are currently pursuing their studies. In 2013, XJTU was awarded by the Ministry of Education of China as the "Demonstration Base for International Education" due to its outstanding performance in the work of international student education.

In 2024, XJTU achieved the highest rating of Class A+ in the re-certification of higher education quality for international students in China. In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities, XJTU secured the 10th position.

Introduction to Xi’an Jiaotong University Health Science Center

Health Science Center (HSC) consists of 4 schools, 1 department, and 3 affiliated hospitals, which are School of Basic Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, Department of Nursing, the First Affiliated Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital, and Stomatology Hospital.

Health Science Center has a current enrollment of 8,935 full-time students, including 3,465 master's and doctoral candidates. The center offers 10 undergraduate majors, 8 disciplines authorized to confer PhD degrees and 8 disciplines authorized to confer Master Degrees. Among these, there are 3 nation-level key disciplines, 55 national key clinical specialists, and 12 Provincial and Ministerial level key disciplines. Moreover, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology & Toxicology have entered the top 0.1% globally in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators) rankings, while 6 disciplines—Biology & Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Neurosciences & Behavior, and Psychiatry & Psychology—have achieved positions within the top 1% worldwide.

Program Introduction

BDS

In 2014, the Stomatology Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University launched the program of Bachelor of Dental Surgery for international students with English as the teaching medium. Until now, the program has enrolled more than 100 international students from 15 countries studying for bachelor degree.

Objectives

The program of Bachelor of Dental Surgery aims to help students to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of dental science and to lay a solid foundation for a successful career as a dentist. In this program, students will develop both analytical and problem-solving abilities with ample proficiency in diagnosis and management of dental problems.

Program features

The length of study is 6 years and the whole program is divided into 4 stages

Stage I: includes 2 terms, students focus on Chinese Language and Terminology;

Stage II: includes 5 terms, students learn basic medical courses;

Stage III: includes 3 terms, students learn dental courses;

Stage IV: includes 2 terms, students do a dental internship.

Curriculum Provision

Basic Medical Courses: Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Pathology and Pathophysiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Health Statistics, Epidemiology, Medical Psychology, etc.

Dental Courses: Dental Morphology, Oral Histology, Oral Pathology, Endodontics, Periodontology, Oral Implantology, Community Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Complete Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Oral Diagnosis, Dental Materials, etc.

Internship

In the last year of the BDS program, students are required to have a one-year practical training in the hospital. During the internship, students will gain clinical experience directly from the doctors. A log book with detailed rotation will be handed to students to guide them through the multiple tasks as required.

Graduation Exam

The graduation exam includes two parts, a theoretical exam (accounts for 60%) and an operation exam (accounts for 40%).

Degree Conferring

Those who are qualified in all compulsory courses, fulfill the internship, and pass graduation exams will be conferred Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Affiliated Stomatology Hospital

Established in 1950, Hospital of Stomatology is large specialized tertiary (Class A) hospital. The hospital covers 75,500 square meters and has 700 dental chairs and 100 beds. Stomatology Hospital receives 900,000 outpatients and 2,800 inpatients per year. It has 1,351 faculty and staff members, among whom 109 have senior professional titles, including 14 doctoral supervisors and 34 master's supervisors.

Application and Admission

I. Eligibility：

1. Under the age of 25 and in good health. Applicants under 18 years old must provide a Guardian Authorization Letter.

2. Valid foreign ordinary passport.

3. High school / senior secondary or advanced diploma. (Applicants who are still in the last year of high school can provide the expected graduation certificate for applying while the official diploma must be provided before Sep 1st, 2026 upon enrollment)

II. Application Time：May 1st, 2026 – June 30th, 2026

Spaces are limited and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are more applications than expected, the deadline might close earlier than scheduled.

III. Application Documents：

All documentation must be complete, true, and correct in either Chinese or English.

1. Xi’an Jiaotong University Application Form for International Students (Automatically formed after online application in XJTU system);

2. Notarized original or translated copies of senior high school graduation diploma, either in Chinese or English. Fresh graduates should provide the original expected graduation certificate issued by their school, and supplement the graduation document when registering;

3. Transcripts

a) Notarized original or translated copies of high school academic transcripts, including courses taken, scores achieved, and clarification of the scoring system;

b) The transcript of the unified standardized examination in the student’s home country or the internationally prevailing standardized examinations (such as A-Level, IBDP, etc.);

4. Language certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo (applicants whose mother tongue is English are free from the above certificate after getting approved from our school);

5. Scanned copy of the China Scholastic Competency Assessment（CSCA）transcript;

6. A recommendation letter written by the high school headmaster or teachers (email, phone number and signature should be included.);

7. Study plan written in English or Chinese with no less than 600 characters or words;

8. Scanned copy of valid foreign ordinary passport (validity period must extend at least six months beyond the intended date of enrollment);

9.Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (download at http://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/2.pdf and fill in Chinese or English. The applicant must strictly take all the examinations as required by the Form. Forms leaving a blank or absence of suggestion and signature of the doctor or seal of the hospital are invalid. The results are valid for six months.);

10. Non-criminal record within the validity period;

11. Other supporting documents. (if you have any)

Note:

a. Documents that fail to meet the above requirements will be rejected;

b. Please provide documents 2-10 in scanned copy and upload to the online application system of XJTU;

c. Documents other than Chinese or English are required to be translated and notarized;

d. During the review process, the school may require students to submit other materials if needed.

IV. Application, Admission and Registration：

1. Take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment（CSCA）

Applicants are required to take the "CSCA Test" organized by the China Scholarship Council on behalf of the Ministry of Education of China and obtain the score report. Applicants can visit the official CSCA website (www.csca.cn) for specific test dates and content.

2. Online Application

Log in online application system of School of International Education to upload the scanned copy of all the required documents.

3. Pay the application fee to complete your application

The university will send an application fee payment notice for application through system information/email to those who pass the initial review. Application is completed only when the applicant pays fully the application fee within the required time. The application fee is non-refundable.

4. Admission

Admission will be granted to the most qualified applicants based on their academic records, language proficiency, CSCA results, and performance in the comprehensive interview. Applicants should pay close attention to the application system and registered email; and follow up the latest information for the academic review, pre-admission, tuition payment and acceptance information, etc.

5. Registration

Admitted students should strictly follow the instructions of the admission documents to register. Registration will take place in early September 2026. The exact date will be specified in the admission letter.

At the time of registration, the school will make a qualification review to re-evaluate the eligibility of the student. As part of the qualification review, the school will recheck all the documents and personal information of the student, including the identity information, original graduation certificates, and language proficiency certificates etc. The school will also check the behavior of the student to ensure that they are a law-abiding citizen and have maintained good moral conduct before the registration period. Those who fail to pass this qualification review will be disqualified from admission.

Note:

a. All information shall be carefully filled and checked, especially the basic personal information which will be used for admission documents.

b. Documents should be scanned clearly instead of photos taken by phone.

c. Online application is the only way to submit your application. Hard copies are unacceptable.

V. Other School Fees：

1. Application fee: 500 RMB/ year

2. Registration fee: 400 RMB / year

3. Accommodation fee: Accommodation for international students is divided into three campuses: Xingqing, Yanta, and iHarbour, which is uniformly arranged by the university according to the current policy annually.
