Congratulations to you and welcome to Xi’an Jiaotong University.
With a history of longer than 3,000 years, Xi’an is one of the oldest cities in China, and used to be the capital of the nation for 13 dynasties. The world-famous Museum of Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuang is located in Xi’an, too. As the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, Xi’an was oriented to become the third Modern international metropolis, the third one in mainland China after Beijing and Shanghai. It is great opportunity for you to explore the history of Xi’an and witness its prosperous development during your study in Xi’an Jiaotong University.
Xi’an Jiaotong University, is a key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China, and is one of the oldest universities in China. Its predecessor is Nanyang College founded in Shanghai in 1896. In 1921, the college changed its name to Jiaotong University. In 1956, the main part of Jiaotong University was relocated to Xi’an, and this relocated part of Jiaotong University was later officially renamed Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1959. As a member of C9 group (IVY LEAGUE in China), Xi’an Jiaotong University is on the List of World-class Universities and First-class Disciplines released in 2017 by the Ministry of Education of China. In 2019, the Western China Science And Technology Innovation Harbor (i.e., the Innovation Harbor), the new campus of XJTU, welcomed its first batch of students started, including over 500 international postgraduate students. Being a leading cerntre for research, culture and education, the Innovation Harbor fives full play to its advantages in scientific research and education of XJTU to develop itself into an industry-university-research cooperation platform. It creates a new model for universities in 21st century. On April 22, 2020, President Xi Jingping visited Xi’an Jiaotong University, and encouraged teachers and students at the university to remain true to their original aspirations, and pass on the “westward relocation spirit” from generation to generation
XJTU now has more than 40,000 students, including over 3,000 international students from 141 countries and regions. School of International Education is responsible for the international students’ affairs on campus. Each student will be designated an instructor, who will be always helpful during your whole study period. School of International Education is the first stop after you enter the campus. We will try our best to support you to make your dream come true.
The year of 2020 is special. The pandemic of COVID-19 is spreading around the world, People from different countries are helping one another in the fighting with the pandemic. We are grateful for your effort and adherence, which leads us to meet each other here in XJTU. We will keep fighting together.
For each of you, this is the beginning of a new chapter in your life. Hereby we hope you:
1. To be a practitioner of self-improvement. With great responsibility and strong social sense, you are expected to have the courage to challenge the old ideas and innovate new ones. Integrate your personal development with the needs of your country and its people, and find constructive ways to contribute to the world.
2. To be a Chinese language learner. We hope learning Chinese could be one of your goals during your study in XJTU. By learning Chinese language, you can also know more about Chinese people, Chinese society, and Chinese culture.
3. To be an outstanding student in your major study. Make full use of every minute and any resources available to study from professors and other people around you.
4. To be a cultural communicator. You are encouraged to make friends with not only Chinese students but also other international students from different countries. We are confident that with the joint efforts of all young people in the world, we can build a better community with shared future for the humankind.
