XJTU Visiting Scholar Program

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), founded in 1896, is a national key university directly under the administration of China's Ministry of Education. As one of China's top ten research-intensive universities and a member of the C9 League—China's equivalent of the Ivy League—it operates as a comprehensive research university, encompassing 11 major disciplinary categories, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and interdisciplinary studies. Nearly 4,000 international students from over 130 countries and regions are currently pursuing their studies at XJTU. In 2013, the university was designated by China's Ministry of Education as a“Demonstration Base for International Education”. In 2024, XJTU achieved the highest rating of Class A+ in the re-certification of higher education quality for international students in China. In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities, XJTU secured the 10th position.

I.Program Introduction

Xi’an Jiaotong University (hereinafter referred as “XJTU”) provides visiting opportunities for international students to take courses or conduct research in the specific academic field at XJTU. No degree is conferred by XJTU. Normally, international students who have high school qualification or above is called General Visiting Scholar. The one who have obtained a master or above is called Senior Visiting Scholar.

Duration

The program duration is jointly determined by the supervising professor and the applicant based on the selected courses or research topics. Typically, XJTU’s autumn semester commences in September, and the spring semester commences in March.

II.Eligibility

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding valid passports and in good health.

For General Visiting Scholars: Applicants must be under 45 years of age and hold a senior high school diploma or above.

For Senior Visiting Scholars: Applicants must be under 50 years of age and either hold a master’s degree or above, or possess the academic title of associate professor or professor.

*A Guardian’s Letter of Guarantee is required for applicants under 18 years of age.

III.Application Deadlines

Applications must be submitted no later than four (4) weeks prior to the start of the intended program semester.

IV.TuitionFees(Unit: Yuan)

Notes：Monthly fee will be charged for the study period less than one academic year.

V.Application Documents

1.Photocopy of Valid Ordinary Passport

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of enrollment

2.Original Non-criminal Recordwithin the validity period

It should be issued by local police or Judicial department. Behavior performance certificate issued by Home University is also acceptable.

3. Completed Original Physical Examination Record for Foreigners and Blood Test Report

The physical examination must cover ALL the items listed in the form. (Download at http://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/2.pdf and fill in Chinese or English.) The forms with incomplete records or without the suggestion and signature of the attending physician, an official cross-edge stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.

4.Original Highest Diploma and its Notarized Copies

Prospective Diploma winners must submit official Certification from their current university.

5.Original Academic Transcript either in Chinese or English with stamp or signature

6.Recommendation Letters

Two original recommendation letters written by professors or associate professors.

7.Certificate of Language Proficiency

Chinese-taught programs: Report of HSK 4 180 points and above. Other language proficiency certificate is also acceptable upon approved by XJTU.

English-taught programs: transcript of IELTS 6.0 and above, TOEFL 80 and above. Other language proficiency certificate is also acceptable upon approved by XJTU.

VI.Application Procedure

1. Log in to the online application system of School of International Education of XJTU (http://isso.xjtu.edu.cn/recruit/login) and create your own account.

2. Select“专业进修项目/Visiting Scholar Program”, complete the online application form, and upload all the required documents as instructed by the system.

3. Confirm that the application is complete and await notification of the next steps.

Note：

a. Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online system; hard copies will not be accepted.

VII.VISA

The university will provide Admission Notice, JW202/DQform (Visa form) for the admitted applicants to applying for X visa for coming to China. Those who are with other types of visas will not be allowed for registration at XJTU.
