2026 Xi’an Jiaotong University International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship in Chinese Language Program
To address the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate the global development of Chinese language education, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as “CLEC”) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), founded in 1896, is a national key university directly under the administration of China's Ministry of Education. As one of China's top ten research-intensive universities and a member of the C9 League, it operates as a comprehensive research university, encompassing 11 major disciplinary categories, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and interdisciplinary studies.
I. ELIGIBILITY
a) Hold a valid foreign ordinary passport;
b) Maintain a friendly disposition towards China, possess no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and comply with the rules and regulations of university;
c) Demonstrate good physical and mental health, maintain good academic and behavioral standing;
d) Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;
e) Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2026. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45.
II. CATEGORIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
1. Scholarship for One-Year Study Program
The program commences in September 2026, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of eleven months. Applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible.
(1) Chinese Language and Literature
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
(2) Chinese Language Study
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.
2. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Program
The program commences either in September 2026 or March 2027, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of five months. Applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible.
Chinese Language and Literature
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
3. Scholarship for Four-Week Study Program
The program commences either in July or December, 2026, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of four weeks. Applicants are required to provide HSK test scores. The program may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10-15 participants per group. Before the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with our university and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for review and approval.
4. Xi’an Jiaotong University International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship for One-Year Study Program
The program commences in September 2026, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of eleven months. Applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.
III. SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE
The scholarship covers tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, a monthly living allowance (excluding the four-week program), and comprehensive medical insurance.
IV. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
a) A scanned copy of the passport photo page.
b) A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK/HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).
c) A reference letter by the head of the Recommending Institution.
d) International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Application Form(Submit to“Other”in XJTU Application System)
e) Non-criminal record (submit to XJTU application system)
f) Completed Original Physical Examination Record for Foreigners and Blood Test Report (Submit to XJTU application system. The physical examination must cover ALL the items listed in the form. (Download at http://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/en/2.pdf and fill in Chinese or English.) The forms with incomplete records or without the suggestion and signature of the attending physician, an official cross-edge stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.)
g) Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China. (You can download at https://sie.xjtu.edu.cn/sqzn/sqclxz.htm and fill in Chinese or English.)
V. APPLICATION DEADLINES (Beijing Time)
a) April 15 for programs commencing in July.
b) May 15 for programs commencing in September.
c) September 15 for programs commencing in December.
d) October 31 for programs commencing in March, 2027.
VI. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1. Submit XJTU Online Application
Log in to XJTU’s International Student Application System (http://isso.xjtu.edu.cn/recruit/login) and submit application materials online according to the instructions. Pay the application fee of RMB 800 (Please note that the application fee is non-refundable regardless of admission results).
2. Submit CLEC Online Application
Visit the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship section of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation website (https://www.chinese.cn/), complete the registration and log in to the program management platform, search for recommending institutions and host institutions. After finishing the online application, please download International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Application Form.
VII. EVALUATION AND ADMISSION
Admission will be granted to the most qualified applicants based on their comprehensive evaluation. Applicants should pay close attention to the application system and registered email; and follow up the latest information for the review, pre-admission, etc. Scholarship results will be announced by CLEC.
VIII. REGISTRATION AND OTHERS
The successful applicant must confirm with XJTU to go through the procedures of studying in China, register at XJTU on the designated date as per the Letter of Admission Notice.
Admitted students should strictly follow the instruction of the admission documents to register. The specific registration time depends on the Letter of Admission Notice. The original language proficiency certificate will be checked again at the time of registration. Those who fail to provide certificate document or fail the certificate verification will be canceled the admission.
